Removing rust from cast iron toy elephant

Q. About 4 years ago we were digging a hole in our backyard to plant a tree and dug up a cast iron toy elephant. It has thick rust all over it. Is there a product or procedure that you can recommend that we use to remove the rust?

A. Try 5% ammonium citrate solution(50 gm citric acid this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] /1 lit water+add some ammonia this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] -pH must be 3,5!). Or you can use very strong tea solution. Only 50 gm citric acid /1 lit water solution works too. You must wax or lacquer it!Hope it helps and good luck!
