Zinc phosphating - Process flow, requirements and specification

April 16, 2008

Hi,
I am Ramanathan,
I am working in vendor development (auto industries)
Here I am looking in surface finishing process, Little bit I know about plating and anodizing process because I handled these suppliers.
In future I will develop zinc phosphating process also.
So kindly consider above mentioned queries and send back to positive feed back
Thanx

Hi, Ramanathan. Two great references for this would be Samuel Spring's Preparation of Metal for Painting[this on Amazon affil links] and "Phosphating of Metals" [this on Amazon or AbeBooks affil links] by Werner Rausch. Good luck.

Hi, Aman. Please see the previously mentioned books for a general intro to phosphatizing issues and problems. Our readers have helped on 50,000 threads so far and I'm confident they can help you with your problems, but you have to give them some information to work with.

No home brew will do as well as a proprietary solution from an established reputable vendor.
Normal cause is the part is not cleaned properly. Grit blast is a preferred method with a quick caustic cleaning to remove trace oils and then processed thru the phosphate.
If you are using an acid dip, then you need an additive in the rinse before the phosphate AND it needs to move with all due haste because it will flash rust after the acid, even in the rinse tank.
