PVD Coating of Nickel Nitride
I Have more than 15 years of experience in Vacuum plating on decorative parts and now I am based at delhi.
I WANT TO PLATE NICKEL NITRIDE BY USING PVD MACHINE & I WANT TO KNOW THE PROCEDURE OF THAT. ALSO I WANT TO KNOW THE COLOR OF THE NICKEL NITRIDE PLATED USING A PVD PRINCIPLE.ALSO WHAT TYPE OF NICKEL SHOULD BE USED TO DEPOSIT USING UNBALANCED MAGNETRON SPUTTERING IN A PVD MACHINE.

Does nickel nitride exist? I know I looked at its possible formation some years ago and rapidly came to the conclusion that normal methods of nitride formation (i.e., CVD type systems) couldn't work. The only option I found was to try to produce it electrochemically in liquid ammonia ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] . By the way - I didn't succeed!

Why are you interested in nickel nitride? I don't know of anyone depositing nickel nitride, or if nickel even forms a nitride. As nickel is magnetic, magnetron sputtering of nickel is not common.

I have deposited nickel with cathodic arc. Reactive deposition in nitrogen may give nickel nitride. A detailed study is required.

Jeff, I was interested in the idea of nickel nitride as it could have given me a very hard but lubricious surface. I had specific engineering needs for such a surface, but alas my work was a "labratory almost-worked".

Yes we can deposit nickel nitride using cathodic arc technique with nickel as a cathode and nitrogen as a reactive gas.
but depositing nickel nitride in megnetron sputtering may be difficult as nickel is a magnetic.
may I know why you are stick with nickel nitride .what are all the properties of the coating and what type applications you are looking to deposit this coating.
we may help if you can give us a clear picture.

Hi,
Is PVD used to coat gemstones also? If so please provide little more information.
