Painting aluminum boat

I have a 16 foot aluminum boat that I want to re paint. Most of the paint is adherent to the aluminum. There are some scratches down to the aluminum and spots where the paint is off. My question is how do I prepare the bare spots and painted spots? Can I prime or etch over the adherent paint or just the bare spots? Any help would be appreciated.

There is a very long and detailed thread, letter 10712, that should answer your questions, Mike.
