Vacuum metallizing
January 16, 2008
I am having a fishing lure manufactured and I have a question about how to finish it. It is made using both lead and stainless steel. This lure with be worked off the bottom and will be bumped of rocks and other structures. The company making it says that Vacuum metallizing with be the toughest finish. With the little research I have done on the net it seems as though that may not be true. I understand that vacuum metallizing with give a nice bright finish but I will sacrifice some luster for durability. Theses lures will be in gold and silver finish. What metallizing process do you recommend will be the best for me to use. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Stephen

You might consider a PVD coating for your parts, maybe TiN or ZrN for the gold, and CrN for the silver (though silver TiN is also available). PVD nitrides are extremely hard and wear resistant. You may have a temperature problem, however, due to the lead in your parts.
