Grade of stainless steel for surgical instruments
January 10, 2008
1. I would like to know which Grades of Stainless Steel best suited for surgical instruments (Laparoscopy) for forceps and for products like Trocar/cannula (Turning items).
2. I suppose German/Japanese/French SS is best suited for the purpose. what makes it so?
3. What process could be applied to regular 304 and 410 grade SS to increase durability of surgical instruments.
4. What process should be carried out for improving their aesthetics and which ones avoided for longevity and corrosion resistance.
Thank you!

Re:
1.) We process these alloys for the medical industry - 303, 304,
3116, 416, 430 and 17-4pH.
2.) I don't suppose that to be true at all.
3.) Passivation via electro-polishing
4.) Mechanical polishing followed by dexo bath and electro-polishing depending on type of esthetic finish required.
