Covering powder coated metal with standard paints

A set of sculpture bases (metal) will need to be repainted as the existing powder coat color is no longer acceptable. The clients cannot afford additional powder coating. They would like to brush on a standard metal paint OVER the existing powder coat. What can we do to prepare the metal and facilitate a long lasting finish?

In general, liquid paints are compatible with powder coating and it is typical for "scratch repair" kits included with powder coated patio furniture, etc., to be liquid paint. It would be best if you knew what kind of powder it was to minimize the possibility of reaction but it generally goes okay anyway. Assuming the powder coating has good adhesion to the substrate, cleaning with detergent and brush, followed by very light sanding, will probably work. Second opinions welcome.

Its as Ted says. Many paints compatible with Powdercoating.
Light sanding to ensure your top coat adheres, and paint away.

Liquid (solvent based) paint is used extensively as a touch up for PC.

Is is possible to use non- solvent based paint, to paint over powder coating on steel; i.e., exterior latex or acrylics?
