Titanium coating or electroplating
My company develops products for several housewares importers. We have been discussing the possibility of placing a Titanium coating on housewares (Stainless steel, mild steel and plastic) and need to know if this is possible. Also, the coating would need to be safe for contact with food.

Titanium cannot be electroplated, but it can be vacuum deposited.

You can vacuum deposit various coatings on stainless steel and mild steel, but it is hard to get coatings to adhere to plastics -- the deposition temperatures are too high. Coatings that are commonly applied for appearance include ZrN for gold and CrN for silver. ZrN is safe, but there may be some concerns with CrN. Also, some of these coatings have been tried on kitchen knives without success. The coatings looked good, and added to the wear life (very significantly), but here in the US most knives are cleaned in dishwashers. Galvanic corrosion resulted. If you are interested in purchasing a system, check with Vapor Technologies in Colorado or Hauzer in the Netherlands. Both will coat some samples for you.

I'm also investigating of the possibility of electrodeposition of titanium or titanium dioxide on copper surface for manufacturing of electronics components. Seems like thickness of vacuum deposition of titanium cannot reach few micron with good uniformity.

Titanium can be electroplated if we can believe two old (35 years) Russian books. You can use titanium hydroxide/ammonium chloride water based bath or titanium chloride/toluene based bath. To be continued!
