Clear Finish for Sand Blasted Mild Steel Walls at Airport

Our office is designing the Fairbanks International Airport Terminal in Fairbanks Alaska, and we chose a sand blasted mild steel finish for about 50% of the wall space in the baggage claim area. We are concerned about finishing with a good clear coat that will not change dramatically, the color of the blasted steel and be durable as well. An added note, the theme of this project is, 'Rough and Ready', including rough wood grain finish on the concrete walls, gluelams, etc. Go to Davisconstructors.com to see the renderings, and project web cam.

Thank you.

There are good clearcoats, Charles, and although we can't print specific brand names in a largely anonymous public forum, readers may be able to advise you of recommended technologies, and our advertisers may respond in private. But do be careful of exposure conditions because clearcoated sandblasted steel lacks the proven corrosion fighting anodic protection of galvanneal; it lacks the corrosion protection against undercutting and galvanic hotspots offered by phosphatizing; and it lacks the full coverage in creases and recesses offered by electrocoating.
