What should be the effect of vinegar on Zinc Chromate?

My company purchased a steel fastener with a zinc chromate plating and blue dye #10 finish. Our customer does not want the blue finish. Placing the fasteners in water removed some of the blue color, but not all. When the fasteners were placed in vinegar in bulk on eBay or Amazon [affil links] for approx. 10 seconds the blue dye was completely removed. Does the vinegar have an affect the chromate to the point of negatively impacting the salt spray performance? Is the plating/dye process suspect since the color can be partially removed with water?

Dear Ross,
Nice to know about your adventurous experiments on the plated parts.since you have done this much please go ahead and do Salt spray Test and see the result by urself. But remember to do the test on with an original plated piece also.
Also please remeber vinigar is mildly acidic(acetic acid this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] ).
Please let us know your findings after SST
