Nickel Plating on Stainless Steel

2007

I was looking for some information on adhesion on Nickel to Stainless and found this website to be quite informative. My question is as follows: I have a bimetal-coupon (18 mm x 18 mm)(Copper clad to 409 SS) which has been Nickel coated (using electrolytic Nickel plating) on all sides. However, while milling the edge of the coupon to distinguish between the Copper Side and the Stainless-steel side of the coupon, the Nickel plating on the SS side started to peel off.

I was wondering if you had general recommendations on the ability of Nickel to adhere to SS upon plating. Does this adhesive strength decrease with increase in temperature (the final parts would be exposed to higher temperatures of the order of 250 deg C).

Best Regards,

With proper pretreatment, adhesion strengths are ~50,000 psi. Heating to promote interdiffusion is a standard procedure to improve bonding.
