Corrosion on Tin Plated Zinc Part

2007

We had a zinc part that need to be tin plated. We had plated the zinc part based on plating thickness Cu:8~12um, Ni:5~8um and Sn:1~2um
We send these samples for salt spray test of 96 hrs (24 hrs fog followed by 24 hrs dwell). Unfortunately the test failed due to the findings of black spots on some of the areas. We had even tried to plate it thicker by a few microns thinking it will withstand the fog test but it failed too. Need some suggestions or feedback to solve this issue, I really appreciate it.

Do you have a reason to believe that tin plated parts should be able to withstand 96 hours salt spray without any black spots, Abdul? I don't know if there is an ASTM (or other) spec for copper-nickel-tin plating, but if there is, what does it say about what constitutes failure?
