Cost calculations for hot dip galvanizing

Q. I wish to set up a hot dip galv plant.
But, costing the process is confusing.
It would be a great help if anyone could explain the various cost factors and exact costing per ton for the hot dip process.

A. Readers are welcome to take a shot at this, Pirashanth, but I personally don't think you will get anywhere until you hire a consultant to look at your location, your employees, your available vendors, the available building, etc. Further, it may even be illegal to discuss some of the elements of your question in some jurisdictions. See www.anodizing.org/antitrust.html as an example of how some organizations feel about even discussing "cost factors" let alone "exact costing".

Although I honestly don't believe that anti-trust among small metal finishers is a "hot button" in the USA, where all 6 brands of paper towels and toothpastes on the supermarket shelf will cost the same to the penny, I suppose it may be a problem elsewhere.

WE HAVE A KETTLE OF SIZE 1 X 1 X 3.5 METERS

Please SUGGEST ANY BOOK FOR CALCULATING AND CONTROLLING THE LOSS. WE USE FURNACE OIL FOR FIRING.

Is it dishonest to price galvanizing services by weight instead of surface area?

September 24, 2014

Q. Hi people,
I was just reading letter 4872, a very informative thread. Thank you.

I would like to ask a question about pricing hot-dip galvanising iron (actually IPE80 joist of 1.2 m (4ft) length and a flange attached to one end). That is how should a galvanising factory price their hot-dip services for given zinc thickness if they want to be honest?

The only galvaniser in our country quoted me [deleted by editor] euros per kilo of metal to be galvanised. Being a novice and totally inexperienced I beg your forgiveness if I sound audacious to you but is charging galvanising by WEIGHT (mass) accurate and honest to the consumer?

I gave him the total surface area of the joists but he refused to charge me per area. He said that the weight of the metal is proportional to the heat it consumes (i.e. the electricity to keep the zinc hot).

Fair enough, but is there a formula to combine the two costs?

Or could please somebody quote roughly some prices for say G90 (which I assume specifies zinc quantity as 9 oz/ft2 = 0.27 Kg/m2) for IPE joists with a flange on one end? (4ft IPE80, flange = 6 mm x 120 mm x 220 mm, 1 mm = 0.039 inches) in order to get some idea about this guy's pricing?

Many Thanks,
Andreas from Cyprus

P.S.: I also suggested to weigh the metal before and after galvanisation to find the zinc it consumed, but he refused.

A. Hi cousin Andy. Yes, I do think it's a bit audacious to imply that it is not honest for a shop to price their service based on the factors they wish rather than the factors you wish :-)

He has told you that he charges by weight, and how much he charges per kilo of metal -- that's more than most people would tell you!

There are a lot of factors that fall into how much a finishing process costs. Labor is always a very important one. Amount of zinc consumed is certainly important, but may not be as important as you want it to be. It's not up to you to pay his laborers their wages, or pay his zinc supplier, or his utility bills, or his trucking company, or his rent, or his insurance bills, or the clerical overhead costs of small orders -- so it's just not up to you to tell him how to price his services :-)

We can openly discuss the issue here as much as anyone wishes, but we can't post prices. If people want to quote you, they can do that in private communication. Thanks for the interesting topic, and best of luck!

Regards,
