How to restore antique brass-plated steel light fixture

2007

Hello -

I have a beautiful antique light fixture that seems to be brass-plated steel (magnet sticks to it). It's pitted, and I was wondering what I could do to restore it. I'm assuming the only thing is to have it re-plated, but assuming I can't do that right now, what can I do to make it look as good as possible until I can have it re-plated?

Thanks,

Try a solution of vinegar in bulk on eBay or Amazon [affil links] , pressed mint, and bonami. this can help to restore the luster. In the end you'll prob have to replate.

Let me know how it works!

I recently bought a brass bed circa 1900, with the idea that I would use antiquing solution to give it a rustic finish. Well after I bought it, I did the magnet test and found that only the headboard top rail is brass, so the rest of it must be brass-plated. Also, the previous owner told me she had it polished and lacquered at one point, but I'm not sure how much lacquer is still on there because the polish has faded away. What can I do to create an antiqued finish on this bed?
