Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral that has been applied as a ceramic coating to titanium implants. This coating is chemically similar to common tooth enamel and can be made very rough to promote tissue adhesion and knitting to bone.

For adhesion to the bone, pure titanium is quite good, but you have to rough it up. Hydroxyapetite has also been accepted by the FDA. For wear surfaces, ion implantation is necessary and FDA accepted -- titanium is not a good wear material, and should not be used in a wear application in the body without surface treatment.
