Protecting copper fountain

I have recently purchased a copper fountain for my office.

There is new patina every day and almost a rust like residue (with the green) when I try to wipe the excess away. Would really appreciate any information on how to coat the copper with a water resistant barrier. Thought about spar varnish but hesitate to do so. Afraid it might turn milky or peel after prolonged water exposure. Thank you for any assistance that you can give. Arlene

What you need to do is clean the copper make sure it is dried and rid of any films then coat the copper with a Krylon Mat clear finish which you can purchase at most paint stores.
