Why does the cathode peel off in Cobalt electrowinning?
Dear Sir,
First of all I would like to introduce myself.I am a researcher from India persuing my research in the topic EFFECT OF IMPURITIES IN THE COBALT ELECTROWINNING.
My query is I would like to know why the cobalt cathode peels of after 2-3 hour of electrolysis, though I am carrying out the experiment with pure cobalt sulphate solution with out any impurities.
I would also like to know is there any reference/book available which can give me the insight regarding this.

What is the "starter" part of the cathode, upon which you are plating, made of, Ajay? I believe it is not uncommon in electrowinning for the cathode to be deliberately made of passive stainless steel so that it will be easy to peel off the electrowon product. More detail please.

In addition to Ted's answer, the internal stress of the cobalt is extremely high in the tensile direction. Check it out with a contractometer or with stress tabs.
