Corona or/and plasma surface treatment

2007

We clean the polycarbonate sheets by solvent for bond it to the aluminum by using adhesives. Sometimes we get delamination. The reason could be non-surface treated of the polycarbonate.

In order to over come that, I have been thinking of using the corona or plasma treatment.

Please could anyone give me the positive and negative points of using this method.

The problem with bonding to polymers is twofold.

1/ The correct adhesive

2/ Cleaning the surface. The usual surface contaminant on polymers is either low molecular weight polymer on the surface or non-stick agents applied to prevent the polymer bonding to the mould. The easiest and cheapest way to clean the surface is a detergent wash followed by thorough rinsing. The problem with solvents is that they can evaporate and re-deposit whatever grease they have dissolved.

Plasma/ corona are very good and VERY expensive. I would try the simple solution first.
But I would also take advice from the adhesive supplier.
