Galvanized Tin Rust, How to stabilize and prolong life of metal
Q. Hi My name is Anthony Davy and I am a Artist based in Humid Hong Kong. Recently I have been working on a project making columns constructed with Galvanized Tin. The subcontractor I used to construct these did not put any rust proofing when exposed the raw metal through grinding and welding. When they got to the painter these areas mentioned had already started rusting. They where polished back before a car paint was applied\baked. This was followed by a treatment where we engraved into the metal with lines. However the rust came through in the same areas, seen in the exposed lines. This was then sprayed with a lacquer clear finish. Finally these were shipped to Japan. This accelerated the rusting on the inside of the columns.
My questions are:1. How can we prolong the life of the rusted metal? Oils? Wax's?
2. What would the life expectancy of 1 MM thick galvanised Tin that has rust that is situated in a air conditioned indoor environment
3. Does rust proofing paint slow down the rusting if the rust is not removed prior to painting?

A. Dear Anthony,
I also live in a humid environment and have witnessed the devastating effect of rust on metal. Here in Australia, most structures are made from corrugated iron as a prevention from bush fire, shark attack and termite infestation. To combat rust, we rub all exposed iron with kangaroo or emu fat. Luckily for us, kangaroo and emu carcasses are easily obtained on most major roads, making the cost of this vital rust preventative very affordable.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards
