Difference between SS 316 and SS316L

Q. Can both SS 316 or SS 316L for application that involves hot oil for heating medium purposes be used?

A. Good afternoon:

The "L" in 316L designates that it has a maximum carbon content of 0.03 percent, compared to 316 maximum of 0.08 percent C. Using 316L should greatly reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion.

A. Hi, Babikir. There is probably no practical difference. SUS refers to Japanese standards for stainless steel, whereas ss is just an informal abbreviation of "stainless steel". The only time it would probably matter is if you are certifying compliance -- you can't certify compliance to a standard that you haven't read word for word.
