Setting Diamonds in Silver

Intro/synopsis: If a silver ring is wanted, consider Argentium® silver for reduced tarnishing, but silver can be soft and precious stones thereby become loose and lost so talk to a professional jeweler.

Q. My partner and I are looking for an engagement ring. However, I am allergic to everything but sterling silver. We are considering having a silver and diamond solitaire ring made for us. Is this a wise idea? Any alternative suggestions- we are desperate!

A. "I am allergic to everything but sterling silver"

EVERYTHING is a big universe. I'll bet you aren't allergic to platinum, and that will make a much nicer ring than will sterling.

A. Try Argentium® sterling silver--special non-tarnishing silver alloy (alloyed with small amount of germanium). Cheaper and better looking than very expensive platinum. Good luck!

A. Janine,
Be very careful with a diamond set in silver. Silver is a soft metal and without adequate hardening alloys you run the danger of the precious stone coming loose in the setting. You may want to talk to a reputable jeweler who designs the jewelry they market. They are familiar with alloys that can fit your lifestyle. Good Luck!
