Here is an example that may help you: Suppose you have a copper wire with a diameter of 1 cm carrying a current of 100 amps. First, find the area carrying the current, in this case it is a circular wire with a cross-sectional area equal to 3.14 X r^2 or 3.14 X (DIA/2)^2. If we let DIA = 1 cm or .01 m, the area is then 0.000079 meters squared and the theoretical current density is roughly 8 mA/square meter.
Each piece of copper will have a different theoretical current density depending on the geometry and applied current. The actual current density can only be measured and will vary based on the material properties and type of copper (manufacturing processes, & C.).
