I believe DLC has been used on the edges of razor blades, which are stainless steel, but the patents suggest there is a problem with getting the DLC to adhere to the stainless, so other metals are used as intermediate surfaces. It should be possible to put DLC onto mild steel but I believe the blade people use magnetron sputtering, not CVD; however, it should be possible with PVD if the correct metal surface is used.
