In mechanical drawings the materials Terne iron and Black iron are shown.
I have seen the material listed in mechanical drawings of the 1930s and '40s as "Terne iron" and "Black iron" to be used in sheet metal fabrication of gasoline tanks and cabin heat boxes in small aircraft. What do those terms mean and what has replaced those materials today?

See www.ussteel.com/corp/sheet/coated/terne.htm for an explanation of terne sheet.
I assume that in those days "black" meant, as it does now, uncoated sheet.
