What is MKS 720 COATING

Q. We want to know what is MKS 720 coating. Is it equivalent to Dacromet 310 or Geomet 720?

Sanjay Chitlangia

A. MKS Stands for Micro layer Korosion Systeme - a brand of M/s Doerken MKS, manufacturers of DELTA MKS systems. It is neither Dacromet nor Geomet.

What is Delta MKS 9000 Coating

Q. Is Delta MKS 9000 a Dacromet or Geomet coating?

Anthony Heno

A. Hi Anthony. Sriram's answer still pertains. It is neither Dacromet nor Geomet, but a competitive product. It is a lamellar zinc dip-spin coating which is free of hexavalent Cr, but since it's not identical to Dacromet or Geomet, only the specifier can decide whether it's equivalent enough for their purposes.

While that may sound like ducking the question, consider a day-to-day example: is Coke 'equivalent' to Pepsi? To Diet Pepsi? To Diet Seven Up? To Orange Juice? Nobody can offer a firm border for 'equivalent'; there is no answer.

Q. I have a wide range of fasteners (hex bolts, washers, screw) that are zinc electroplated, approximately 3 million pieces. Do the parts need to be stripped in order to be dip spun with Geomet 720?

Matt Sulimowski

A. Hi Matt. I would say "probably" for 3 reasons.

1. Adhesion may not be good enough;
2. sufficient clearance may not be available for both coatings on small screw threads; and
3. the old hardware might have hexavalent chromates on it, which would likely be a problem since the new coating has been specified as hex-free.
