Make my axe head a little prettier

I have a nice old axe head , removed the rust and want some kind of finish on it , blue , black or anything other than zinc plating or galvanization , is this too much to ask?

It can be black oxided or painted any color you like, Matthew. But only a zinc coating offers sacrificial protection to deter rusting.

Try 20(2)gm tannic/15(1,5) gm phosphoric/1 lit (100 ml) water solution(simple do it yourself rust converter this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] ) -- when dry you must lacquer it (baked 20% shellac solution is best simple finish/30 min.150 °C). Good luck!
