White and Black powder coating in a single paint booth.....does anyone recommend this?

2007

Hi there!

Higher management of my company is planning to run two different colors (white and black) on two different parts in a single Powder coating paint shop in two different timings (per say in day time white and night time black). The spray booth is manual and it does have a conveyer system that takes it to pretreatment and drying ovens, etc. I personally disagree with the management's decision. What do you experts say about this type of powder coating practice? I am much more concerned about black spots on the white parts and white on black parts.....what you say?

Your crew will definitely become experts in booth cleaning, but this changeover shouldn't scare you any more than any other color change. Other things to be concerned with when making the change is compatibility of the two paints, even if you didn't have color cross-contamination you could still end up with formulation contamination. Some paints can't be mixed, e.g., epoxies and polyurethanes. This change-over would be faster and more successful if you have dedicated hoppers, delivery hoses and pumps also.

In our Powdercoating shop we use the same booth for over 100 colours, changing colours several times a day. It takes about 10-15 minutes for a booth with 8 guns.

If your booth was designed for colour changing (most would be) then your only consideration is a proper cleanup.

Dear,
I have worked in a home appliance company [refrigerator units] and we're use to 4-6 colour change per day [two shifts, i.e., 16 hours]. Doesn't matter how many colours you are running in a single booth; the only thing is the quality of cleaning in every colour change.
