copper sulphate color when HCl is added

Q. Just wondering what Colour copper sulphate this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] is when HCl is added to it. Also what colour does it change to when this solution (copper sulphate and HCl) is added to 50 ml of water? Does it change when it is heated or chilled? What if I added Sodium Chloride to it?

Kate,
The first thing that you need to know is what form is the copper sulphate in? If you go to a good chemical reference book, you will find that there are several. There are very strong odds that it is the hydrated form which is what nearly everyone means when they say copper sulphate. Next, is it in crystalline form or a saturated solution? Do your chemistry formula: on the input side, put copper + sulphate + H + chloride = ? + ?, etc.

Now you will need a good chemistry book to see if there is any reaction. You will definitely have a mixture solution form, but are any new products formed? Some good internet work or some great library work will give you colors when you add it to water. Here you need to consider what the strongest color will be and if there is any shading of the colors as they mix.
My bet is that this is high school and there the answer is normally the simplest one.
Please come back with what you find.

When anhydrous copper sulphate is added to water it becomes blue. Anhydrous copper sulphate also becomes blue when added to HCl, why? Because of the H ions?
