Rust Problem on Tinned Piano Wire
I am a patent holder of a flexible automobile locator device (hold a small flag) consisting of a compression spring etc..I have used Tinned Music Wire 0625 per ASTM A228 (US specs) and .250 OD a very tight coil? (25 1/2 " length.) Perfect except for the rust . Is it because of tight coil? Is it mfg-Is it material?. Do I need nickel coated wire? ( I want one step production only and economical).

Outdoor exposure on an automobile is very severe, Eugene. It's not going to work with an inexpensive plating -- you would need high quality nickel-chrome plating. Maybe try powder coating.

Or a switch to stainless steel. Material costs more, but no plating cost or time.
