Finishing of old titanium

2007

Dear Sir,
We are manufacturers of titanium baskets/titanium heating and cooling coils.
We buy titanium sheets in the form of scrap and we need to clean them in order to get the sparking finish.

Using scrap metal bothers me, but it may work for you. Typical cleaning would be a soak in a hot caustic solution (proprietary ones will work better) and then a dip/soak in a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid in a ratio or 10 parts nitric to one part hydrofluoric. The nitric can be from 10% to 30%. Start on the low end and make adds to keep the speed in a useable range.
Rinse very very well after each step. A final dip in hot DI water helps to reduce spotting.
