Paint will peel off galvanized steam vessel

I BOUGHT A 1900 ELLIOTT STEAM VESSEL. THE BOAT IS COVERED IN GALVANIZED STEEL. I'M TOLD EVERY TIME IT'S PAINTED IT STARTS TO PEEL AFTER ABOUT TWO MONTHS. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT TO DO TO HELP THE PAINT STAY LONGER ? THANKS

If galvanized=zinc plated(immersed in molten zinc)you must pretreat it with conversion coating solution.Zinc can be phosphated or chromated, both processes are too complicated for do it yourself option- try to find special paint or pretreatment solution for zinc.Good luck and hope it helps!

Check out letters 1341 and 39949 - they both deal with painting galvanizing and might help you out a bit.

According to some of my notes, you need to use a primer formulated for galvanize [Galvanize Primer this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] [affil links]] to prevent the rather prompt peeling.

Good luck!
