Platinum refining
I refine small amounts of gold, and usually use urea to destroy the excess nitric acid in aqua regia. Recently I dissolved some platinum scrap (takes a lot longer), in aqua regia. When I added urea, the usual fizzing occurred, but the chloroplatinic acid seemed to drop out immediately. I have read elsewhere here that use of urea for platinum is not recommended. Why? My precipitate was certainly chloroplatinic acid, as I subsequently had no trouble reducing it to platinum.
