I am looking for a test that will determine the presents of hard chrome on hardened steel material sometimes it hard to tell if it's polished or hard chrome? Can anyone help ?

A drop of hydrochloric (muriatic) acid will react with chrome dissolving it with release of bubbles, a green salt and leaving it dull in a matter of 1 min or less. No visible action or change on steels.

You can use a copper sulphate this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] solution. An indication of red colour on steel. Good luck .
