Peeling of galvanized coating
2006
We galvanize very large finned coils (heat exchangers). After galvanising, forced air cooling is necessary to avoid peeling
(Kirkendal effect.)Due to the size and the heat content, the coils will remain very hot during a long time .
My question: is there also a relation with the zinc bath composition
(lead, aluminium, etc.) and the occurrence of peeling?

Sir:
The worst peeling of galvanized coating that I have seen was on re-phosphorized silicon-semi-killed steel. Perhaps checking the steel composition would show this. The peeled coating was quite brittle and would not bend without making a "snap" noise as it broke.
If the peeled coating is easily bent back and fourth without breaking then the pickling/fluxing step in the galvanizing would be suspect for problems.
