What paints to use on brass

2006

I have removed from our cemetery posts, one each, that were badly weather worn and hardly legible. After have them sand blasted.(that came out beautiful.)They are solid brass! With a textured background with polished raised letters. The trim around the whole plaque is also polished.

My question is,what paint can I use for the background? Does it require an undercoat? I am very serious about this and appreciate any advise you can give me.Thank you for anticipated reply.

Sincerely,

Norman Pearce

To paint brass you should prime with an oil-based primer or a latex primer for rusty metal. a oil-based primer like Kilz [affil links] would be your cheapest way. If you do not prime, a green color will come through the top coat. Any exterior grade latex or oil paint could be used for top coat.

Our company manufactures cleaning and restoration products for the cemetery markets. We have a cleaning and refinishing product for both granite and bronze markers. We can also advise on restoring bronze markers which have gone to weather (green or discolored).See our website and look under cemetery products.
