Double nickel coating peel off problem

2006

Dear Sir or Madam:

Most recently, we have encountered coating peel off problem with our products. The shield with base material CRS (cold roll steel) requires a double nickel coating process so as to prevent the rust issue with the hang points. But actually some of shields are seen nickel coating peel off problem.

So, I'd like to get your professional knowledge about this serious problem.
1) Is it a normal practice for this kind of plating method? How's the normal failure rate?
2) Does this coating peel off problem related to the hang point exchange process after 1st nickel coating?
3) How long will it take to finish the whole double nickel coating process normally?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Rebecca. You seem to be referring not to a duplex nickel plating sequence, but to the need to re-rack nickel plated parts and replate them to ensure that the area of the original rack marks becomes plated. Nickel plating becomes passive very quickly--long before you can get the parts reracked. So you need to start the second plating sequence with a Wood's nickel strike. Good luck.
