Finishing Antique Iron Garden Furniture

I have 2 iron tables and 4 iron chairs that were painted white but are rusting. Is there any product that I can apply over paint after I have removed the rust that will keep the iron from rusting or do I have to apply prior to repainting? I want to retain the weathered look without the pieces rusting more. I was told that I could coat them with a "metal protector". What is a metal protector?

Rustoleum offers several metal protectors, some are spray paint others are oil based. Check out their website for further information.

They all work.
