Nickel Chrome Plating On Aluminum
2006
Dear,
Can aluminium be plated by Nickel or Chromium or Nickel & Chromium for decorative purposes such as automotive trims? What would be the resistance to corrosion? Can the coating peeled off? Any risks? How to do?
Sincerely,
Tim

Not only can it be done, I am quite confident that it has been done by the OEMs. I am not in the auto industry nor even a car nut so I can't quote make and model, but I believe some automobile grills from the 70's are chrome plated aluminum, and some bumpers as well. Aluminum alloy pressure-cast wheels are chrome plated, which is a more difficult application.
The corrosion resistance should be fine. A zincate-based immersion plating process is required, which leaves one more possibility for peeling if not done right. Hopefully you'll get a more detailed response from someone in that industry.
