Electroplating solutions

2006

I am a 8th grade student doing a science project on electroplating. I use the solution from FAQ, but for my report I was wondering if you could tell me an industrial formula.

thanks,

If you could be specific as to what metal you are electroplating I think you would get the information you want. Also, the information is available from metal finishing reference books, such as the Metal Finishing Guidebook, Electroplating Engineering Handbook [on AbeBooks or eBay or Amazon affil links] and others. I would try a local electroplating contract (job) shop for a copy of this book. Maybe a college engineering school library would have a copy. Good luck, keep up the good work. Maybe you will make a career of metal finishing.

The anode is zinc and the cathode is steel (nails).

Hi Thomas. There are several different industrial plating solutions for plating zinc onto steel. Professionals tend to divide them into 3 classes: cyanide zinc, alkaline non-cyanide zinc, and acid zinc. The referenced handbooks will inclue one or more formulations for each of the three types. Good luck
