Removing mild tarnish from nickel-plated brass
Quickstart:
Metal polish will remove nickel tarnish, but without chrome plating on top it will tarnish again. These days chrome plating is often done, but before about 1930 chrome wasn't available, so tarnished nickel can be a sign of a vintage item.
Q. A most basic question. I have a nickel-plated brass model railroad passenger car. And it has some mild tarnish, finger prints, etc. How would I begin to clean up the thing ? Need best path forward. Thank you.

A. Metal polish is made for this purpose, James, and many brands are available. Wenol ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] is one that is recommended for all metals except aluminum. Of course, if the nickel plating has worn through to the brass in spots, polishing it can't restore the nickel, it would have to be sent to a plating shop.
