What is Electro Galvanising?

What is galvanising?

Kapil S Warghade

The term isn't much used in the USA, and even then it is only used in the continuous coil coating field and as a label on fasteners for consumers, but it means zinc electroplating.

Sir,
I would like to know about galvanising line, its erection, commissioning, design pt of view, mechanical pt of view in details.
thanking you.............

Yogesh Mahantare

For the amount of information you require you really need to discuss this with a plant manufacturer or a plating consultant. This board is not the correct forum to conduct the amount of detailed discussion required to answer your question.

Quite true, John. When a specific question is asked, a forum like this can sometimes answer it; but when a subject fills thousand-page books, no one summarize the subject in a paragraph or two.

Hot dip galvanizing line consists of provisions/mechanisms for pickling, fluxing, drying and feeding in to the zinc bath, withdrawal from zinc bath, quenching and passivation of article. Design point of view will depend on production req'd, sizes and shapes of articles to be galvanized, and any other processes to be completed before and after galvanizing, i.e., inspection or segregation . Erection and commissioning, mechanical point of view are not much different from that of any other plant/machinery. Design may include environmental consideration. Nothing more can be discussed at this forum.

Hi, Sameer. Zinc electroplating averages about one-fifth to one-tenth the thickness of galvanizing, so it is far cheaper but far less corrosion resistant. However, it can be semi-decorative. Good luck.

Sir,
I would like to know how electroplating is done for galvanising. The Chemicals used..etc.
We have a product which is a 3 mm thick wire, it is to be Galvanised because after welding the protection wears of..

Rohit Waghchaure

Hi, Rohit. We have an FAQ: "How Electroplating Works" that you might wish to look at. There are excellent plating books reviewed on our "Must have" booklist. But I think you need to talk to a consultant, or at least a vendor, about this. Maybe "cold galvanizing" (zinc-rich spray paint) is the best answer, maybe zinc electroplating, maybe hot dip galvanizing -- and each is the subject of whole library shelves :-)

We'll be happy to try to answer any specific questions as they arise. Good luck.
