When was clear trivalent chrome plating first used on fasteners rather than hexavalent?

Terry McGuffey

Please phrase your question in terms of your situation rather than casting it in the abstract, Terry, because it then become needlessly vague and difficult to answer. There is no clear chrome plating, I suspect you are referring to clear chromate conversion coating on zinc plated fasteners. Wide spread production of zinc plated fasteners with trivalent chromate conversion coatings probably began about 3 to 5 years ago and the conversion of all shops is of course not yet complete.

I can think of at least 3 companies, large and small, that have been marketing trivalent conversion coatings for zinc for at least twenty years. Actually, the former Conversion Chemical Company (Kenvert) was manufacturing a product (I believe it was 171) about thirty five years ago. The newer generation of high corrosion resistance materials have come into use in the past 5 to 7 years.
