Regarding specification for Saccrometer in phosphating

2006

Hi,
The Saccrometer which we use for checking the accelerator content of a phosphating bath was broken and we bought a new meter. We found variation in both the old and the new meter. can you just tel me what is the specification for making / buying a Saccrometer.

I am not familiar with Saccrometer which gives a measure of the accelerator content of the phosphating bath. I presume it should be somewhat similar to a meter with ion selective electrode.

The variation in the accelerator concentration measured using the old and new meter could be due to the sensitivity of the probe. It may require activation and calibration. Check with your supplier regarding this.

The Saccrometer is basically Gas Analyzer instrument made of Glass. One has to fill the Saccrometer with the Phosphating bath solution and add 1 gram of sulfamic acid this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] (L.R. Grade).

There is a scale printed on the top side of the instrument and in about 4-5 minutes of addition of Sulphamic Acid the reading will come. What happens is a reaction where by the Nitrite converts into gas and is moved out of the solution there by we get the reading.

There is no fixed manufacturer source for this instrument as Borosil does not make it.

For Mr. Anurag - Thank you for the information about Saccrometer.

For Ms. Akalya - I suggest you to calibrate your Saccrometer using known quantities of accelerator (nitrite) with a fixed quantity of AR grade sulphamic acid this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] . Construct a calibration curve using at least 5-6 concentrations in the working range of the accelerator content of the phosphating bath.
