Friction Hinge problem
I would like to understand how a friction hinge can be produced so that the Torque for opening is about 35% less or more than the closing of the hinge. Unaware of any material restrictions aside form 'good fit' of pin in hinge channel.

The scope of this site is limited to metal finishing, Patrick, and this sounds more like a linkage design issue--but maybe there is some sort of one directional surface finish that someone can comment on. It is easy to picture an elastomeric bushing on the hinge pin with a splined or geared cross-section and 'slanted' teeth like in a ratchet, such that the teeth easily bend out of the way for one direction of rotation, but tend to jam in the other direction.
