Corrosion of stainless steel by 1M sulfuric acid

I want to make a stainless steel cell, but I worry about the corrosion when I use this cell with 1M Sulsuric acid. Does it have any reaction between them at high temperature (80 oC)?
Thanks a lot!

Hi Do,

I haven't got a clue what you mean by 1M sulfuric acid ... 1M ? What is that?

Normal (car) battery cells use 36% sulfuric and that would
sure chew up your stainless steel especially at the temperature you gave.

Ed. note: 1M means a 1 molar solution, i.e., one gram molecular weight per liter--which we believe is about 98g/l, say 10 percent by weight.

There is a choice of stainless steels that will not be greatly worried by that application (corrosion rates of less than 0.1 mm per year)

Tell us what grade of stainless steel you are considering - perhaps it is suitable. If it is not suitable, we may suggest some different grades. What size is the item you are planning to construct?

I do not think that there is any common SS that will stand up to 1M sulfuric at 80C. At 20 °C yes, but not 80.

Dearest James,

Thou hast made perhaps a Boo.Boo .... becos according to my copious data on Atlas Steels, 3l6 stainless in a l0% sulfuric solution is A.OK at 60 °C ... no data given for 80 °C. The other stainless's are not resistant.

'tis the welding I'm always suspicious of.

Well, that may be true for pure sulfuric acid, but 316LL seamless tubing will not last more than a year in an anodizing tank in FL when you shut the chiller off over the weekend.
So, is it a boo boo or real life?
