Need info on TD Coating

2006

My name is Mark Runnels and I am in Augusta, GA.

"Handbook of Thermal process Modeling Steels"

on AbeBooks

or Amazon

(affil links)

We are currently making a line of consumable tooling that we are having hard chrome plated, but we need to find an alternative to chrome.

We are looking at the Thermal Diffusion (TD) process as an alternative, but I am having problems finding reliable information regarding this process. We need to do it in-house rather than outsource it.

Can anyone provide a brief description of the physics and chemistry involved? I have a general understanding of the process, but need more specific information as to the proper salt to use in the salt bath, the proper vanadium salt or compound to add to the bath, and specifics regarding the process steps and controls.

If you cannot, or would prefer not to, provide this information, can you recommend a book, website, or other resource that might prove helpful?

Thank you for your assistance,

J. Mark Runnels, PE
- Augusta, Georgia, USA

Ed. note: I think patent 6458218, presently viewable at http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6458218.html will be informative, Mark.

The book "DIFFUSION CHROMIZING OF ALLOYS" by G.N.Dubinin [transl. from Russian], 509 pages, ISBN: 8120500695 may be helpful. Many V compounds are analogs of Cr compounds, and the procedures should be quite similar.
