Test methods to distinguish hot dip galvanizing and electroplating

Q. As a testing laboratory, we are often asked to confirm whether the zinc coating present in samples is by hot dip galvanizing or electroplating. Are there any standard method to identify and confirm the same?

A. Sir:
Because hot dip galvanizing (after fabrication) is virtually alway thicker than 2 mils (e.g. more than 51 microns) and electroplate zinc is almost always a thin coating (e.g. a few tenths of a mill), a simple "banana" magnetic thickness gauge can normally differentiate between hot dip and electroplate zinc.

A. Dear All:
Peace be upon you,
It can differentiate between hot dip galvanizing and electroplating easily by visual, where electroplating is brighter and smoothly than hot dip one.
Moreover, the thickness of coating usually thin especially in continuouss hot dip galvanizing (10-25 micron, less than 1 mil).

What makes the difference if make a hot dip product with 51 microns & one with 85 microns. Does it affect the strength of the product.

A. Hi, Deepak. Galvanizing is not applied to increase the strength of steel, and it doesn't. It is applied to deter corrosion, and the anticipated service life is approximately proportional to the thickness of the zinc coating.
