Hex. Chromate Alternative Treatments -- European Approved

2006

QUALICOAT - The [European] Association for Quality Control in the Lacquering, Painting and Coating Industry, has listed approved alternative pretreatments for aluminum. http://www.qualicoat.net
[choose language, Download Area, List of Approved Alternative Pretreatment Systems]

Products from Chemetall (Oakite), Henkel and Macdermid are likely available worldwide.

Thanks to Timur Ulucak of Turkey for mentioning such approved coatings.

Ken Vlach [deceased]
- Goleta, California

contributor of the year Finishing.com honored Ken for his countless carefully researched responses. He passed away May 14, 2015.
Rest in peace, Ken. Thank you for your hard work which the finishing world, and we at finishing.com, continue to benefit from.

I know that Luster-On Products Inc. also manufactures a non-hexavalent conversion coating for aluminum. Luster-On Aluminescent meets or exceeds MIL-C-5541 as well as complying with RoHS, ELV and WEEE European directives. I believe that they distribute that product globally in a powdered more economical product than the other Navy licensees.

Ed. note: Thank you for bringing to our readers' attention the fact that Luster-On offers such a product also. However, please don't offer appraisals of one proprietary product versus another (like "more economical") because this naturally leads to the other suppliers feeling the need to tout their products, and the rce to the bottom is on :-)
