Tin plating is burning at 10A/ft2
2006
Hi
I am facing a problem of burning of the bearings after the tin plating in acid bath. which contains the tin fluoborate, fluoboric acid and brighteners and the current density is 10A/ft2.
Any facing same problem in the past. If any one faced same problem or have any idea about this problem please answer.

You gave us the make-up of your tin bath, but what are the metal, acid, and brightener concentrations? If they are all in range, run a hull cell to try to duplicate the burning. Add small amounts of brightener to see if the burning can be reduced or eliminated. If you get good results from the hull cell without adding brightener, check the power source on your tin tank with a sample load in place using a multimeter on the buss bars comparing voltage and amperage to the rectifier. If that checks out ok, you could have short or long chain organics present in the bath preventing the tin metal from depositing properly. You could try carbon treating a small amount in the lab, then run another hull cell to see if conditions improve. Let me know how you make out.

Hi,
Get the operating instructions form the chemical supplier and try to find out whether you are plating in the right current density. Also by increasing the concentration of Tin, Raising the bath temperature and increasing the agitation you can solve the burning issue.
