Burnt Copper-Bottom Pot - Dangerous Fumes?
Q. My favorite copper-bottomed (RevereWare) pot got so badly scorched that the copper finish has mostly flaked off. Can I still use the pot, or would heating it release any fumes which would be dangerous to my family? I only want to steam veggies, so I don't especially care if it heats perfectly uniformly. RevereWare company, OF COURSE, said I shouldn't continue using it, but gave no technical reason. Any chemists, etc., out there who really know? Thanks.

A. I have RevereWare too and some of it got overheated and has blisters in the copper. They are just stainless steel pots with copper plated onto the bottom. I wouldn't even think twice -- I'm completely confident that the pots are now both ugly and completely harmless.
